Description of the rose variety Flamentants, planting and care, shelter for the winter

The lush-flowering, with a heady aroma, the Flamentanz rose is a decoration of summer cottages and front gardens. It is widely used in landscape design as a hedge. Due to its resistance to temperature extremes, it is grown not only in the southern regions, but also in Siberia.

History of crop breeding

A hybrid rose variety of Cordesa Flamentantz with large bright flowers was bred in the rose gardens of the famous W. Kordes' Sоhne trading house after crossing with Rose rubiginosa in 1952. The variety was introduced to the general public three years later.

Frost-resistant hybrids with climbing branches, characteristic varietal properties are the special pride of the famous dynasty of German breeders. The name corresponds to the appearance of the plant during flowering, as translated from German means "dance of fire".

Difference from other species: the pros and cons of the variety

The Flamentants rose differs from other varieties in endurance, high winter hardiness.

The only drawback and distinctive property noted by Cortez himself is flowering once a year for a month.

The list of the variety's advantages is wider. It includes:

  • resistance to pests, fungal diseases;
  • frost tolerance down to -30 ° C;
  • stable delicate aroma;
  • abundant flowering;
  • rapid development of the bush, which does not cause difficulties in reproduction;
  • longevity;
  • use in vertical gardening of backyards, summer cottages.

hybrid roses

The height of the bush, the number of flowers on the stem depends on the correct choice of planting site, adequate care. Florists especially appreciate the Flamentanz rose variety for its resistance to negative winter temperatures. In the southern regions, the bushes do without shelter, and in the northern regions they insulate the plant unreasonably.

Subject to the rules for performing agrotechnical work, the rose blooms safely in one place for up to 20 years.

Description of the plant

Cortez considered the Flamentanz hybrid to be the best among the red-flowering climbing roses he created. The fact that the bush blooms once does not prevent it from being popular in Scandinavia and among domestic growers.

Budding and flowering

In the southern regions of Russia, budding and flowering of the variety occur from the second half of May to the end of June.In the regions to the north, the Flamentanz rose delights with its lush bloom two weeks later.

Cordesa Flamentanz

The buds, under the weight of the petals, of which there are 20–40 pieces, tilt slightly downward. When the bush blooms with bright red double flowers reaching 12 cm in diameter, the branches can break if not secured to the props in time. Against the background of large fiery flowers with large yellow stamens in the center, the green shiny foliage of the bush is lost, becoming less noticeable.

Depending on the composition of the soil, climatic conditions, both single specimens of flowers and lush inflorescences bloom. Up to 15 buds are formed on one stem. The aroma of rose Flamement is pleasant, gentle, unobtrusive.

Bush and root system

The Flamentanz rose bush is spreading, the height varies from two to five meters, depending on climatic conditions. Branched shoots with wide thorns at the base. If you do not prune every year, the bush takes on a sloppy look.

The root system of the plant is well developed and powerful. Not susceptible to freezing in frosty winters, rotting with excessive rains.

Conditions of detention

In order for the varietal properties of the Flamentant rose to be fully revealed, they adhere to the recommendations for creating suitable conditions for the plant.

Lighting and location

The abundance of flowering is primarily influenced by lighting. Choose a place on the south side of the site. The optimal time for the sun's rays to hit the bush is 6-7 hours a day. Extending the lighting period leads to a loss of color intensity in flowers.

If the place is chosen correctly for the rose - without drafts and close occurrence of groundwater, then the plant does not need a transplant for many years.

Temperature

Provided the soil is moistened, high summer temperatures are favorable for the Flamentanz rose. The variety is valuable in that it adapts to different climatic conditions, withstands temperature drops from -35 ° C to +35 ° C.

Air and humidity

The rose responds favorably to moderate air circulation, but categorically does not accept drafts. During the growing season, the bushes are especially demanding for watering.

With a lack of precipitation, low air humidity, the Flamentanz rose is sprayed with a spray in the early morning and evening. At this time, direct sunlight is excluded from the leaves.

Soil composition

Rosa Flamentants loves sandy loam soils with good drainage, loams with humus content, chernozem. The plant prefers acidity slightly acidic or neutral.

Air and moisture permeability are of great importance. Stagnant water is unacceptable. At the same time, the composition of the soil must retain enough moisture for the rose. Soil fertility is increased by compost, humus. Since the roots of the crop are strong, the thickness of the arable layer must correspond to their length.

Planting seedlings in the open field

The planting material is inspected for damage, deformed or dried areas. For the plant to develop faster, the branches are cut to 25-30 cm, the cuts are smeared with garden pitch. The roots are soaked for 2-3 hours, shortened, treated with ash.

Planting a rose

In open ground, it is preferable to plant the Flamentanz rose together with an earthen clod. Therefore, it is better to purchase a varietal plant with a closed root system. After the end of the event, the bush is covered with a film, creating greenhouse conditions.

Optimal timing

Flamement roses are planted in the spring before bud break, when the soil warms up to + 10 ° C.

The optimal planting dates are late April or early May.

This period is favorable for rooting, rapid growth. If the buds of a rose seedling purchased in a nursery have opened, then they wait for the beginning of flowering of fruit trees, after which they plant.

Planting is allowed in autumn, but no later than early October.Otherwise, the bush will not have time to adapt, in winter it will die from the cold.

Technological process of disembarkation

In order for the Flamentanz rose bushes to take root safely and delight with abundant flowering, the following algorithm of actions is observed when planting a plant:

  • prepare a landing pit with a depth and width of half a meter;
  • maintain a distance between the pits of 1 meter;
  • a 20-centimeter drainage is poured to the bottom - stones, fragments of brick;
  • moisten the soil;
  • a fertile soil layer is mixed with half a bucket of manure or humus;
  • drop in the seedling, keeping it upright;
  • from above, the soil is compacted with feet;
  • once again water the seedling, mulch with sawdust, bark.

For better rooting of the plant, the roots are previously placed in Kornevin's solution.

Crop care recommendations

The Flamementz rose variety is not picky about care, but watering, feeding, weeding of weeds is indispensable. In order for the culture to decorate the house or summer cottage with abundant flowering annually, form and sanitary pruning of branches is carried out, the bushes are treated with drugs that protect against insect pests and diseases, and the plant is prepared for winter.

Irrigation

On hot summer days, during the period of rapid growth of green mass, a bucket of water is poured under each rosebush twice a week. With the appearance of buds, watering is reduced to 1 time in one and a half to two weeks.

Fertilization

In the spring, with the beginning of the growing season, roses are fed with complex mineral fertilizers with an emphasis on nitrogen and phosphorus. They stimulate the growth of new branches, increase the immunity of weakened roses of the Flamentants variety - Agricola, Hera "Spring", Fertika.

Two weeks later, compost is introduced under each bush, embedding it shallowly into the ground. A month after the first feeding, the plants are watered with infusion of chicken or cow droppings. During the budding period, the bushes are sprayed with a chelated complex.

Fertilization

Increases frost resistance, prevents diseases and pest attacks, the introduction of potassium fertilizers in the fall - Kalimagnesia, Potassium sulfate. To increase the culture's resistance to cold weather, to strengthen the roots, superphosphate is used.

Soil loosening and weed control

The unpretentiousness of the Flamentantz rose variety allows weeding and loosening of the soil once a week. It is advisable to carry out agrotechnical measures the next day after watering, when a dense crust of earth forms under the plant.

Peat, compost, humus used as mulch attract earthworms. The aeration of the soil increases, more oxygen enters the roots.

Removing weeds reduces the risk of disease and pest attacks. The bush gets more nutrients.

Formative pruning

The first pruning of the Flamentants variety is carried out at planting, shortening the stems by 30 cm from the root. In the second year, in the spring, weak growth is removed and the branches are shortened, leaving four buds on each. In September, damaged deformed branches and non-lignified shoots of bushes are removed, on which buds have not formed. Pinch the tops of the leading lashes.

Pruning roses

In the third and subsequent years, in early spring, they get rid of the bent branches growing in the crown. Annual basal branches are shortened by 1/3, old ones are cut out. If there are no young shoots, then the old stems are not completely removed. Leave 20 cm lengths to stimulate the growth of new lashes.

With the formative pruning of roses, it is taken into account that budding occurs on the branches that appeared last year. The lateral flowering branches are annually shortened to the third bud. For the formation of the crown, powerful, beautifully directed branches are selected.

Support installation

Before the beginning of the flowering of the rose Flamentanc, flower growers take care of the stability of the branches of the bushes, prepare the supporting structures. When choosing a support, they are guided by reliability, compactness, decorativeness.

supports for roses

Pergolas, replacing gazebos that serve as recreation areas, are built independently. Metal pillars are dug in on both sides of the garden path. An arched lattice roof made of wood is attached from above. The height of the pergola should match the size of the rose bushes.

A cone-shaped support is built from metal, plastic pipes. Set closer to the thickened part of the plant. They plant the Flamentanz rose along the chain-link fence or make a wooden trellis net fixed to the posts.

Shelter bushes for the winter

Shortly before the onset of cold weather, the branches of the plant are removed from the support. Under the weight of their own weight, the whips bend to the ground. You should not rush to shelter the bushes, since after the first frost a thaw sets in, the Flamentanz rose may shrink.

Wait for a stable negative temperature (6–7 ° C). On a clear, sunny day, branches are tied in bunches, laid on a layer of dry leaves, boards, hay. In this position, the stems are fixed with arcs. You can do without them, but with the arches, the culture is provided with air access, which minimizes freezing and podoprevanie.

From above, the rose is insulated with any covering material - spruce branches, spunbond, agrofibre, roofing material. You can use cardboard boxes, plastic wrap.

Climbing rose propagation

The most effective breeding method is cuttings. Blooming or faded shoots are selected. The bottom of the cutting is cut obliquely directly under the kidney, the top - exactly, away from the kidney.

The lower leaves are removed, the rose stalk is buried in a container with a substrate diluted with sand to a depth of 2 cm. A plastic bottle is fixed on top to create a greenhouse effect. After a month, the shelter is removed. The pot with planting material is left before planting in the ground in a room with a temperature of 25 ° C. With the onset of stable heat, the plant is planted in a permanent place.

Gardeners reviews

The attitude of summer residents and flower growers to the Flamentants rose variety is expressed in reviews.

Irina, 33 years old:

“After the construction of the country house, my dream came true - to plant roses. The landscape designer advised us to purchase the Flamentants variety, which is adapted to our climatic conditions, weaves, looks spectacular on props. I planted bushes along the fence, on the south side of the house and near the gazebo. The plants survived the winter perfectly. The next year they bloomed so profusely that there were more flowers than leaves. Leaving takes a little time, but how beautiful! My advice is to regularly spray plants with chemicals. Otherwise, caterpillars and aphids will attack, which is difficult to get rid of. "

Natalya Petrovna, 45 years old:

“Five years ago, a neighbor at the dacha gave a stalk of a rose to Flamentants. The plant quickly adapted to the flower bed, began to curl. I had to ask my husband to make an arch. It blooms with a red flame every June for a month continuously. Care is not burdensome. In the fall, I take off the whips, cover it with spunbond. In the spring I attach it to the support, treat it with fungicides. After the flowering of the rose, I remove the dried inflorescences, feed them with organic matter, ash, superphosphate. Before wintering, I cut out old branches. The previous winter, I left the whips on the arch, wrapping them with two layers of agrofiber. The bush remained safe and sound. "
