Often during and after childbirth, animals experience complications - the uterus does not actively contract, the afterbirth does not leave for a long time, which increases the risk of infection of the genital organ, a bacterial infection joins. In such cases, veterinarians prescribe drugs that stimulate labor. Uteroton is used for goats, pigs, cows, and is sold in veterinary pharmacies.
Description of the drug "Uteroton"
Uteroton is a solution for intravenous or intramuscular administration containing propranolol hydrochloride. It belongs to the group of stimulants of the contractile activity of the myometrium (the muscular uterine layer). After administration, the goat activates its own oxytocin, a hormone responsible for the contraction of the muscles of the uterus, the production of colostrum and its movement along the milk ducts to the nipple. Also, the drug has a powerful anti-stress effect.
It is sold in a glass container with a volume of 100 milliliters in the form of a ready-made solution for injection (it does not need to be diluted with anything).
In what cases is used
Uteroton is prescribed to goats under the following conditions:
- stimulation of labor with diagnosed atony (loss of tone of the uterine muscles), hypotension (weak uterine tone), prevention of untimely discharge of the placenta;
- the inability to reduce the uterus to its original size after childbirth due to its damage (viral or mechanical etiology);
- in the complex treatment of endometritis (inflammation of the uterine layer of a bacterial nature) after childbirth;
- increased fertilization with artificial insemination or before mating.
Usually "Uteroton" is prescribed by a veterinarian if during childbirth the goat has problems, or after them the afterbirth is delayed. But experienced farmers who know the characteristics of specific goats can use the drug on their own.
Instructions for use in veterinary medicine for goats
Goats are most often injected with "Uteroton" intramuscularly, if the condition is not acute and does not require immediate injection into a vein. The dosage is calculated by the veterinarian and depends on the weight of the animal. A dose of 10 ml is usually used for cattle; 5 ml of the preparation is enough for goats. According to the instructions, "Uteroton" is applied as follows:
- to stimulate contractions and increase the tone of the uterine muscles - enter once before childbirth;
- in case of untimely discharge of the placenta - give injections every 12 hours three times;
- with non-contraction of the uterus and the development of endometritis to accelerate the release of the inflammatory exudate to the outside - three times, once a day, as part of a complex treatment;
- when mating to increase fertility - once half an hour before the procedure.
The agent is accurately dosed and injected using a disposable sterile syringe. It is impossible to violate the scheme of use, since this medicine loses its effectiveness. If the farmer forgot to give the goat the next injection on time, it is necessary to do it as soon as possible, but not to introduce a double dose as compensation for the omission.
Side effects of the remedy
Uteroton rarely causes side effects if the goat is not allergic to the active ingredient of the drug.
If the dosage of "Uteroton" has been exceeded, the goat may develop the following symptoms:
- decreased heart rate;
- bronchospasm;
- pressure drop;
- muscle weakness.
Due to a severe overdose, the animal's heart can beat less than 50 times per minute, which requires immediate treatment with Atropine, Isadrin or Orciprenaline2.
Contraindications of the drug
"Uteroton" should not be used during pregnancy if the goat is not yet preparing for childbirth - it will provoke a miscarriage. Also, drugs that increase the contractile activity of the uterus are not prescribed if the fetus is not properly positioned when it comes out legs forward.
During the feeding of a newborn kid, the use of Uteroton (with delayed placenta and the development of endometritis) is allowed only under the supervision of a veterinarian. It is not recommended to prescribe the remedy to young animals.
Expiration date and storage rules
"Uteroton" is stored in a room with a temperature regime of no more than + 5 ... + 25 aboutC, separate from animal feed, without opening the original packaging. The medicine should not be exposed to direct sunlight. You can store the product for 36 months from the date of production, after which it is prohibited to use it. If the package has already been opened, the drug is usable for no longer than two weeks, the remains should be disposed of.

Preparations similar to "Uteroton" must also contain substances that stimulate the contractile activity of the uterus. In veterinary medicine are used:
- "Oxytocin";
- "Uterobag";
- Magestrofan;
- "Pituitrin";
- "Prostenon".
The dosage of the drug and the frequency of application are calculated by the veterinarian in each case separately. "Uteroton" is a safe product for animals (safety class 4, according to GOST), rarely causes side effects, helps to avoid complications during and after childbirth.
